Requirements to apply to Michigan State University

Admission into Michigan state university is quite competitive even though the application process is simple. There are three ways to apply to the university; students can apply through the website at admissions.msu.edu or through the Coalition application and Common application.

The school does not show any preference for the methods, all applications from any of the methods will be treated equally. The first step of the application is choosing your category; freshmen or transfer, undergraduate or graduate, indigenous or international applicants, etc.

For freshmen and transfer students, an application fee payment of $65 for indigenous applicants and $75 for international students is required before you can submit your application.

All official transcripts are to be mailed directly from your previous schools in an official sealed envelope to the Office of Admissions Hannah Administrative Building, 426 Auditorium Road, Room 250 East Lansing, MI. 48824-2604.

In situations where the hard copy documents cannot be mailed, they can be sent through online services such as Parchment, Common App, eScrip-Safe, Naviance, etc. if the original transcript documents are not written in English then an official and certified translation of the document must be sent along with it.

Transfer applicants are required to send official copies of results to the Office of Admissions. These results can be of a College Level Examination Program or International Baccalaureate exams.

Applicants are also required to submit an essay of at least 250 words but not more than 650 words using any of the given prompts as a guideline. The essay increases your chances of admissibility as well as consideration for any of the Michigan state university scholarships.

It is important to note that Michigan State University does not require letters of recommendation for the application process.

International applicants however are required to submit English language proficiency test results such as IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, and any other language test if English is not their first language. Michigan state university is test-optional, which means that international students are not required to submit SAT or ACT scores for admissions.

International students are however encouraged to submit their scores if they are considering applying for the Michigan state university scholarships.

International students are also required to show proof of financial support. They are required to upload a bank statement and a signed affidavit of financial support needed documents to apply for a student visa. This is also required if students consider applying for any need-based Michigan state university scholarships.

Michigan State University Admission Application Deadlines

The university uses rolling admission. Depending on some factors such as space in the class you are applying for, it may not be possible to apply for certain semesters. Admission decisions are made within 8-12 weeks after the complete application is received.

For freshmen applicants, the early action deadline is the 1st of November while the deposit deadline is the 1st of May, and transfer students are advised to apply at least 6 months before the semester begins.

Students who apply for regular or rolling admission will automatically be considered for some Michigan state university scholarships.

This is a merit scholarship that is awarded to a few international undergraduate students who have shown commitment to promoting the #YouAreWelcomeHere message by bridging intercultural diversity.

Eligibility

To apply for this scholarship, students should be first-year international undergraduates of the Michigan state university. The applicants must possess citizenship in a country outside the United States and do not possess citizenship of the United States or a permanent residency.

Applicants of this scholarship must have a score of 79 and a subscore of at least 17 or higher in TOEFL. They should also have a score of 53 and a subscore of at least 48 or higher in PTE.

Applicants must also demonstrate commitment to activities that involve intercultural interactions and learning.

Level/Field of Study

Considered fields of study for this scholarship are Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Nursing. All the mentioned courses are eligible only at undergraduate levels.

The scholarship worth

YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship awards $25000 annually per student although there is no specific number of students to be given. The award can only be used for tuition and fees and is renewable for up to 8 semesters.

How to Apply for YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship

Just like in the case of other Michigan state university scholarships, applicants’ transcripts, certificates all other academic records must be sent from all their previous schools.

After the academic records have been received students can now complete an application form after which they are required to submit a personal statement either in an essay of 500-1000 words or in a video of 2-5 minutes. The personal statement is to describe how you hope to support and promote intercultural interactions and unite cultural divides.

MSU Honors Excellence International Awards

The Honors Excellence Award is one of the Michigan state scholarships funded by the university to assist both indigenous and international students and non-Michigan students

Eligibility

To be eligible, the applicants must have an ACT score of at least 33 and an SAT score of at least 1500. Applicants also have to meet the required English language tests requested by the university.

Students also must have gained admission into the university to apply.

The Global Spartan Scholarship is available to freshmen and transfers undergraduate international students who have demonstrated academic excellence.

Who is Eligible to Apply for Global Spartan Scholarship
