The University of Alabama is a public research university that was founded in the year 1820. It is the largest and oldest university in Alabama and is considered the flagship of the University of Alabama system.

The school is divided into 190 academic programs of study at undergraduate (70 programs) and graduate (120 programs) levels such as Medicine, Anthropology, Romance languages, Engineering, Arts, etc. The university is located in the heart of Tuscaloosa Alabama and its law school is the only publicly supported one in the state. All courses offered are eligible for at least one of the University of Alabama scholarships.

University of Alabama Acceptance Rate

The University of Alabama’s acceptance rate is 53% which means that you have a 50/50% chance of being admitted. Applicants (exception of international students) are required to have an ACT score ranging from 24-30 and above and an SAT score of at least 1300. The SAT and ACT scores are used in awarding most of the University of Alabama scholarships.

Admission Requirements

Students are required to submit language test scores as well and are also required to pay an application fee of $80 for undergraduate programs and $40 for graduate programs to submit their applications.

The University of Alabama requires letters of recommendations for admission so applicants are required to submit them alongside their transcripts and other official academic records. These documents are to be sent directly from their high schools or previous schools to the Office of Admissions.

Applicants are also required to provide a financial statement that proves that they have the financial support needed for tuition and other fees. This is necessary even if the applicant is applying for any of the Alabama university scholarships.

The applicants are also required to create their ‘MyBama’ accounts after they have completed their application because all supplemental documents concerning their visas will be uploaded there. They will need to upload a copy of their passports, F-1 visa requests, and other relevant immigration documents.

The university has incorporated scholarship applications into the admission application. This means that some of the University of Alabama scholarships are eligible for students who complete their application for admission by the 15th of January. The application is done online so all documents can be uploaded online at appyl.ua.edu.

The Cumulative Grade Points Average required to get into the university is a minimum of 3.7 and above.

Application Dates and Deadlines

The deadline for the fall semester is the 1st of May, the spring semester is the 1st of October and the summer semester is the 1st of March.

The National Recognition Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for this scholarship, students must be recognized by the College Board National Recognition Program of the university and you will receive a certificate which you must submit to [email protected] before the first of May.

Applicants must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher and are also required to write and pass the PSAT or MNSQT with the required scores (scores vary per year).

The eligible nationalities for this award include; Hispanic, African American, or Latinx.

Level/Field of Study

The eligible fields of study for the scholarship include all undergraduate courses offered in the university.

Scholarship Worth

  • Cost of tuition for 8 semesters (4 years)
  • $1,000 yearly stipend for 8 semesters (4 years)
  • Cost of on-campus accommodation for this year of school.

National Merit Finalist Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria

This scholarship is available to students who are recognized as National Merit Finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Cooperation and students who applied to the University of Alabama as their first choice with the National Merit Corporation.

The eligible fields of studies for the award include; degree-seeking undergraduate, graduate, and law school studies.

Scholarship Worth

  • Tuition for 10 semesters
  • Cost of 4 years on-campus housing
  • $3,500 per year stipend for 4 years
  • Onetime $2,000 for study abroad or summer research program. This is only after completing one year at the University of Alabama.
  • $500 per year as books allowance for 4 years.

There is no specific number of awards.

How to Apply

Take the PSAT. If you pass the test and qualify as a National Merit semifinalist you will be notified by the board, if you then qualify as a finalist you will submit your finalist letter to [email protected]. Finally, you must put the University of Alabama as your first choice.

Academic Elite Scholarship

This is one of the University of Alabama scholarships that are awarded by campus organizations of the school.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for this scholarship, the student must be accepted as a member of the University Fellows Experience (UFE) and the student must maintain this membership to maintain the scholarship. Students must also have an ACT score of at least 32 and SAT score of at least 1420 with a cumulative grade point average of 3.8 and above.

Level/Field of Study

The eligible fields of study for this award include all undergraduate courses offered at the university.

Eligible Countries

The eligible nationalities for the award include all nationalities represented by students in the university.

Number of Awards

The number of awards offered yearly is 8; 7 academic elites and 1 top academic elite.

Scholarship Worth

The seven academic elites will receive

  • Tuition
  • Cost of one-year accommodation on campus
  • $8,500 stipend yearly
  • $500 yearly book allowance

The top academic elite will receive

  • Tuition
  • Cost of one-year accommodation on campus
  • $8,500 stipend for the first year
  • $18,000 stipend for the remaining years
  • Onetime $5,000 for study abroad or summer research program. This is only after completing one year at the University of Alabama.
  • $500 yearly book allowance

International Students Scholarship

This is one of the few Alabama University scholarships that are solely for international students.

Eligibility Criteria

For students to be considered for this scholarship they must have been enrolled in an undergraduate program and the undergraduate degree coursework at the University of Alabama.

Who is Eligible to Apply for International Students Scholarship

Only international students are eligible to apply for and receive this scholarship award.

Eligible Countries

The eligible countries for this scholarship include all nationalities outside the United States.

Level/Field o Study

Eligible fields of study eligible for this award include all Bachelor’s degrees in any programs offered in the school.

Scholarship Worth

The scholarship award is worth $8,000-$26,000 and there is no specific number of awards to be given.

How to Apply

Requirements

Students are required to get admission to the undergraduate degree coursework at the university by filling the application form online. After the application, attach the following documents; passport, academic records and transcripts, visa and immigration documents, PR card, etc. Students are to also provide SAT, ACT  language tests results and also fulfill other admission requirements of the university.

The application deadline for this scholarship is the 15th of January
